In many ways Edmonton does compare favorably with Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. There’s an interest among homebuyers to check out real estate listings in Edmonton these days, as more people have grown appreciative of its charms.
In fact, in 2017 Edmonton finally found itself ranked among the top cities in the world. In one survey, it was listed as #60, and that’s not a bad ranking for a city that was often overlooked for so many years.
Of course, your Edmonton residency will only be as enjoyable as the neighborhood you pick. So where should you live here in this city? Here are some of the top favorites:
- This part of town is almost a hundred years old, but it seems to improve as the years pass by. Its age adds to its charms, as the area is filled with refurbished historic homes just oozing with grandeur and elegance. It’s also ideally located near the active 124thstreet. It’s far enough away from that street to have some peace and quiet, but the neighborhood is also near enough from there that it’s very convenient.
- This is also another perennial favorite among homebuyers, and those who already live here don’t want to leave at all. Why would they? Many of the homes have great patios, and people can just walk around to find the places they want to visit. These places include the great weekly farmers’ market, along with various establishments for live entertainment and theatre. You have plenty of festivals every year as well, including the lively Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.
- For an increasing number of Edmonton residents, Glenora has become the best neighborhood in the whole city. Many of the 3,500 people who live here are averse to higher density housing, so they voted against infill housing and basement suites. More than two-thirds of the residential places here are detached homes. So what you get here is the quintessential small town that has the iconic fountain in the famed Alexander Circle, plenty of streets lined with trees, and an energetic community league. Add the neighborhood’s proximity to the downtown area as well as to High Street and the river valley, and it sure is a dream location.
- Glenora and Westmount housing can be a bit on the pricey side, and that explains the increased interest in living in Grovenor. This is a sister community to those aforementioned neighborhoods, and here the housing situation is a bit more affordable for younger families.
Many of the homes here are somewhat small, but often they’re part of the package as the property is often sold near the land value. That’s why some buyers are just tearing these homes down to build a bigger and better home. Families love the fact that most of the elite schools in Edmonton are accessible from Grovenor, and runners and bikers will enjoy the nearby Valley Trail along the river.
- The personality of this neighborhood is changing and becoming more active, and that’s due to the younger incoming demographic. Many of the senior folks are moving out, while many of the newcomers are young families. Convenient amenities are always nearby, but its true selling point is that the whole neighborhood offers plenty of breathing space. There’s more room between properties, and the boulevards are wider as well.
Of course, some other Edmonton residents may be howling about how their great neighborhoods have not been mentioned on this list. After all, Edmonton still has Oliver, Ritchie, Sherbrooke, Prince Charles, and McQueen!
