Every startup has at least some degree of difficulty when starting with operations. There are plenty of things to consider when running a startup business, which means you’ll always be trying to find new ways to improve performances. No matter the difficulty, every challenge can be overcome with a good dose of persistence. Dr. Tom Maibenco has launched a number of private healthcare initiatives and knows exactly what life is like for a start-up, here are his thoughts.

Tom Maibenco says Unwavering focus is key

When you first start operations with your startup you’ll have to define your set goals. That means you’ll have to exactly what you want to achieve, and how you’re going to do that. However, it’s easy to lose sight of the primary goal after a while, so you’ll constantly have to remind yourself. Always maintain steady control, and always aim towards your primary goals. Everything else is a waste of time, so if a task isn’t something that’s aligned with your goals then don’t do that task.

It’s all about teamwork

The people that found a startup must work with other people they trust. That means there’s no time to go about distrusting your coworkers’ working habits and choices because no startup founder can afford to take time off crucial tasks to correct something that was already working properly. As a founder you can’t micromanage every single employee or coworker. Sometimes you have to come to terms that some sacrifices have to made every now and then in the spirit of teamwork.

Create a functioning process

Working randomly will rarely yield success. What you want to do when you’re working with a startup is to identify which working process works best for you and your business. That way you’ll always know which way to do something, which will in turn allow all your employees and coworkers to adapt to these circumstances. However, you must also make sure that the working process will benefit the startup first, and anything else second.

Always measure everything

Using metrics and analytics is the best way to ensure that you’re always heading towards the goal. By using metrics you’ll always know just how much progress you’ve made, which parts of the process you should change, and which parts to completely erase. Having concrete metrics at your side will allow you to always be in the know about every part of your business. Make sure to use every analytics tool at your disposal so that you’ll always have more than data when you want to take the next step.

Identify milestones

Every startup has competition. That means no matter how hard you try you’ll always have someone running against you, but that you’ll always have someone to compare to. Having milestones is not only about understanding your own goals and business, but to also understand how far your competition has gotten. Make sure to set important milestones so that you’ll know just how much progress you’ve made, but also to see how much progress your competition has made too.

Running a startup is absolutely difficult work. It takes a lot of time and dedication, but as long as you follow the tips from Tom Maibenco, you’ll see that you’ll be able to accomplish the task you set out to do.
