For anyone who leads a busy life, the importance of sleep often takes a backseat. Many of us think that we can shave a few hours off our nightly sleep in order to get more done during the day, but this in fact may not always be the smartest idea. Famous sleep expert Dr. Cletus Georges MD, often speaks about the dangers of not getting enough sleep each night. For the record, the recommended amount of sleep which you get each night is between 7-9 hours. Not only should you be sleeping for this long, but you should also ensure that it is high quality sleep, and here is why it is so critical.
Brain Health
When we are in a deep sleep our brains are allowed to process the events of the day. Additionally the brain uses this time to relax and to repair cells which may have been damaged. what a lot of people don’t know is that we can easily link later-life diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia to those who have spent a lifetime not getting the right amount of sleep each night.
Alertness and Concentration
In line with what sleep can do for the brain, we also have to recognize just how important sleep is with regards to our ability to concentrate and focus. Many of you will be all too well aware of the fact that after a rough night of sleep, you just don’t feel your mental best. This is because the brain has not been allowed enough time to properly rest and recuperate. This is again why it makes no sense to go without sleep to do more during the day. The reality is that a lack of sleep will give you more hours in the day, but you will not be at your best to use them in the right way.
Skin Problems
We have already mentioned how the brain uses your sleep time to regenerate cells, and this is exactly what the rest of the body does too. This is often why you will encounter skin issues if you do not sleep properly, because you are not giving yourself the right amount of time to properly recover. Skin can quickly appear dehydrated and dry after multiple days of not getting enough sleep.
Energy Levels
One of the most important reasons why we should get enough sleep is so that we can maintain strong energy levels throughout the day. If you are consistently getting a good night of sleep then you will find that your energy levels will not waiver as the day goes on. If however you go without sleep, then you will find that you have huge energy dips throughout the day, because you are nowhere near as rested as you should be. This will greatly affect performance both in your job and at home.
This is why sleep is so important to us all, and why we should all make sure that we get those Zs.
