For a number of years now I have wanted to get involved with photography but it always seemed to be quite a daunting hobby to get started with. The beginning of lockdown last year however gave me the perfect reason, and the perfect time, to finally give this hobby a shot. I started off with a pretty basic camera and focused on getting tips from professionals online about how to get started. I used to read the social media pages of people like Robert Testagrossa and watched hours of YouTube guides on the finer points of taking photos.
This was a hobby which I actually wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy, but it didn’t take long for me to totally fall in love with snapping shots. I have so far focused on nature photography, and here is why I have fallen in love with it.
- Everyday a Challenge
I appreciate that there are some very skilled photographers out there but for me this seems like a craft which I am never going to perfect, and that is in fact something that I quite like about it. I love the fact that everyday seems like a challenge and that no matter what it is that I am trying to take photos of, there will always be things which I have to overcome when taking those shots. This gives you something that you can really get your teeth stuck into, and of course it is something which never gets boring.
Showcasing Your Work
Those early photos which I took could have never found their way onto the walls of my home, but over time, as I improved, I really wanted to show off my work. There are few hobbies like this, where you can produce something and then actually show it off in your own home. I am determined to keep on improving so that I can keep on adding those pictures to my wall, and this is something that really provides a sense of pride.
Easy to Start
I like many thought that this would be an expensive hobby in which I required huge amounts of equipment, but the reality is in fact very different. In fact I actually have friends who take photos and they use nothing more than some software, and the camera on their smartphone. Even if you are going to buy equipment, there is so much high quality stuff that you can pick up second hand, which makes getting started easy and relatively inexpensive.
Genres
I decided to focus on nature because I enjoy it, but there are many genres of photography which you can focus on depending on what you like. This could be taking portraits of people, it could be urban landscapes or it could be the natural world, the choice really is yours.
Anyone getting started also has free access to a wealth of resources online which can greatly help you to improve your skills.
