If you are about to embark on a college degree studying the performing arts then it is important that you know exactly what you are in for when you sign up. I studied at the American Musical and Drama academy and to be completely honest when you read through the AMDA reviews you can’t really get a sense of what it is actually like to study there. With this in mind then I wanted to share with you what my experience was like studying performing arts. I cannot speak for everyone of course but my own experience could help you out in choosing what you want to do in the future.
What is it Really Like?
The truth is that studying at AMDA or ay performing arts school for that matter is very difficult. Getting a place alone is a mammoth effort and when you get it you need to prove that you fully deserve it. This means long days studying all disciplines of performing arts, practice sessions, rehearsals, big events and auditions become a part of your daily life. To say that this type of course is intense would be an understatement, and you must be ready to work your heart out if this is what you want.
Student Life
In my experience the social side of college is not the same when you study performing arts when compared to some in other colleges studying different topics. There is time for socializing of course but you simply won’t have the time to focus heavily on your social life because you will either be too busy or too tired. Making friends is easy however because you are constantly working together in groups and teams and this allows you to get to know people better. There is also the freedom of expression which is encouraged and that allows you to break down walls to really get to know people.
Professors
The teachers or professors will work you incredibly hard and they will ensure that they get every last drop of energy and effort from you. What you need to understand is that these teachers have been in this world, they have worked in performing arts and therefore they know exactly what is required from you if you wish to have any chance of success. Our teachers at AMDA had and were working on stage shows on Broadway, training and rehearsing with some of the best in the business which is why we gave them so much respect and ensured that we took every last piece of information from them.
Emotional
During your time at a performing arts college you will go through the most incredible emotional rollercoaster that you could ever imagine. You will be heart broken on a number of occasions, you will taste elation of the highest order, you will have your feelings hurt and you will be built up and knocked down more times that you can possibly imagine. All of this is necessary to prepare you for the world of performing arts, you are going to have the time of your life!
