It can be downright challenging to get out of our own heads at times. Whether we’re stuck on thoughts about work, feeling anxious about a relationship, or our thoughts keep bouncing from one thing to the next. Overthinking can cause a whole slew of negative mental and physical health issues, which is why it’s important to try and work through it if possible.
You just scheduled an AC repair with Confident Comfort, and you decide it’s time to start looking for ways to help you be more present and not consumed with your thoughts. That’s why we’re here to help by offering 4 easy methods to get out of your own head. Let’s get right into it.
Home in On Your Senses
Our senses are incredibly powerful when it comes to what we’re feeling. So often, we lose ourselves in our thinking – that we forget about what we hear, what we feel on our skin, or what we see in front of us. This is what makes focusing on your senses an easy way to get out of your own head. The next time you feel consumed by your thoughts, bring your awareness to your senses. Focus on what you feel on your skin or look around and shift your focus to what you see. This is an easy way to ground yourself and stop the cycle of overthinking.
Focus on Your Breath
All of the emotions we experience are connected to our breath. Think about how your breathing is if you feel excited, peaceful, or nervous. You can notice how your breathing changes based on how you feel. This is what makes focusing on your breath an effective way to get out of your head. Instead of focusing on your overwhelming thoughts, you instead pay attention to each inhale and exhale. This is a form of meditation that can help you to be more mindful and present which are both essential for losing the grip of compulsive thinking.
Write it Out
When we’re stuck in the stream of overthinking, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly how we feel. Our thoughts are jumbled and all over the place, and this makes it challenging to determine what exactly our thoughts are telling us. Writing out your thoughts is a great method to releasing your thoughts. When you write out what you’re feeling inside, it gives you an opportunity to organize and structure your thoughts in a healthy way. You can see, clearly on paper, what thoughts are useful and what thoughts aren’t.
Put Your Thoughts Into Perspective
What are your thoughts, really? Are they the truth? Are they subjective? It’s important that when you feel lost in your thoughts, you take a pause and analyze them as objectively as you can. You can do this by asking yourself questions like the ones listed above. When you become curious about your thoughts, it makes it much easier for them to not consume you. Instead of taking every thought as fact or believing in them – you can instead see them for exactly what they are, just thoughts.
