Stairs Success – Stair Lifts And Other Easy Upgrades For The Elderly

We all know someone who is ageing and is starting to need care in some form or other whether it’s something as serious as needing in home carers to come several times a day or they just need some minor adjustments around the home to make it safer for them to live in for longer, there are things we can do to help our friends and relatives to stay comfortable and safe into their old age. Here are a couple of easy ways we can do up their homes in order to keep them at home for longer, which is what many of them prefer.

Installing Stair Lifts

If your elderly friend or relative lives in a home where they need to have access to the second floor either for the bathroom or for their bedroom considering the option to install a stairlift can be a great way to help them retain their independence for longer. After all, who doesn’t want to sleep in their own beds every night? Stairlifts will help them be able to do this and more, all the while allowing them to still live in their own home, well into their old age.

Changes To Flooring

Flooring can be a bit of a problem when it comes to the elderly. With shuffling feet, less mobility and potential trip hazards, all of these can spell problems for your friend or relative. Changing out the flooring to ensure it suits their individual mobility needs is a great way to help them be able to live in their home without worrying that something in the flooring may cause them to trip or slip. Replacing carpeting that is loose and adding in rougher tiling or grip strips to certain flooring can help reduce the likelihood of slips.

Bathroom Handles and Other Handles Throughout the Home

Installation of bathroom handles on showers or bathtubs as well as on walls and near the toilet can help your loved one be able to use the facilities in their bathroom longer than they would be able to without the assistance of extra supports. Other changes to the bathroom such as elevated toilet seating or in shower stools to sit on can be added as well. If your loved one wants to keep it relatively posh looking though, nowadays there are a number of great shower options that can be installed that feature in shower seats built right into the design.

Handles and supports throughout the home can additionally be added to hallway walls and the like to provide added security all around the home.

Changes To Kitchen Organisation

Helping your friend or relative make changes to their kitchen cabinet organisation can help them as well. Many people with mobility issues won’t be able to step up and down off stools very easily, or if they can, they won’t want to run the risk of missing a step and slipping and falling, potentially seriously hurting themselves. By putting things they commonly use in lower cabinets you can help them find everything they need with ease.

There you have a couple of great ways you can do up a loved one’s home in order to help them live at home longer, without having to give up their independence before they’re ready.
