Water shortages have created critical health and development problems in Mulada village. In order to provide families with enough water for daily use, the village needs ten rainwater harvesting systems that will allow community members to collect and store 50,000 liters of water from the monsoon rains.

The roof rainwater harvesting systems provide the community with a sustainable solution to capture and store rainwater during the monsoon season as well as the infrequent visits from the government water tankard vehicle. Rainwater will collected through a gully system that is attached to the roof and empties into an underground water tank.

Each reinforced concrete water tank will also include a closed top to keep water clean and devoid debris and pollution, in addition a handpump that will allow families to procure water from the tank with ease. The ten rainwater harvesting systems will be disbursed throughout the village to ensure that every family has easy and reliable access to clean, drinking water.

Mulada is a small, agricultural community of that borders the desert in Gujarat, India. Families in Mulada work primarily as agricultural laborers or cattle herders, and live on approximately $2 a day. There is no plumbing, electricity, or public works infrastructure in Katiya, and families rely on the monsoon rains for both drinking water and agricultural work.

Recent droughts and water shortages have created a critical water problem for the Katiya. Village women must spend 4–5 hours walking 3 kilometers to collect water from a neighboring well. They must make this trip about three trips a day, carrying heavy pots of water on their head, to obtain enough drinking water for their family's daily use. The lack of water for washing and cleaning has created health and hygiene problems, and families are unable to obtain enough water to foster a healthy community.

Direct Impact of Your Project

Provides Mulada families with the infrastructure to collect and store 50,000 liters of clean, drinking water for use during the dry season. With the roof rainwater harvesting system, families will have enough drinking water for year-round use, including water for cooking, cleaning, and washing.

Extended Impact on Your Partner Community

Reliable access to clean, drinking water will greatly increase will greatly improve the health and hygiene of the Mulada community. Drinking water collected from the monsoon rains will lessen cases of water-borne disease.

Village women will no longer have to spend 4–5 hours everyday walking 3 kilometers to the nearby well for water. They can use the time saved for agricultural work or other productive activities, and earn an extra income for their families.

In addition, excess water collected will allow families to irrigate their small plots of land, and grow and sell crops. This will provide Mulada families with an additional source of income.
