The Social Action Squad (SAS) at Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) is spreading awareness about the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) and raising funds for Art/Music/Theater Lessons for CTAOP/Mpilonhle’s mobile health units. These opportunities enrich the lives of the students visiting the mobile units, who have a 50% chance of contracting HIV/AIDS in their lifetime.
Each Mpilonhle mobile unit provides healthcare, HIV/AIDS testing and treatment, computer training, and other resources to 3,500 students per year, plus 5,000 community members when schools are not in session. Together, the fleet of mobile units reach approximately 10,000 students from 12 high schools and provides services to over 20,000 community members annually. Since 2007, Mpilonhle has provided these services to over 50,000 school-going youth and community members in the Umkhanyakude District of KwaZulu-Natal Provice, South Africa, which has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection in the world.
The Social Action Squad (SAS) at Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) is conducting the Artists for Africa: Providing Arts Education for South African Children fundraising campaign comprised of three components in order to raise funds for at least one month of Art, Music, or Theater Lessons for CTAOP/Mpilonhle’s mobile units.
(1) Information Campaign (May 12th-27th): Publicize CTAOP information & fundraisers around the school through various media outlets
(2) Waffles for Peace // Breakfast (May 24th-27th): Make & sell waffle breakfasts throughout the week. This will also be paired with a Nutrition/Healthy Eating message. OCHSA cafeteria will also donate 10% of pasta sales at lunch to this project.
(3) Movie Night and Raffle (May 27th): Sell tickets to a movie night in the Margaret A. Webb Theatre in Santa Ana, California. Have a raffle with donated auction items.
Along with the vital public health services they provide, Mpilonhle provides computer training at every mobile unit, expanding student’s occupational prospects. Other enrichment opportunities, including Art/Music/Theater programs, are offered when funding is available. These enrichment programs both attract students to the mobile units, and increase the positivity of their experience visiting. They enhance the mobile units ability to become positive, community resources.
CTAOP and Mpilonhle hope that this integrated and comprehensive approach will provide students with the opportunity to succeed in life – the chance to make use of the freedom that was the result of many years of struggle , a struggle that had worldwide support. Both CTAOP and Mpilonhle feel that it would be a waste of the historic legacy of the struggle if the first generation born after South Africa gained freedom was not able to make use of that legacy because of ill-health or poor education. Mpilonhle relies on donors such as CTAOP to carry out its programs.

About Me: Hi! We are the Social Action Squad (SAS) at the Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA)! We are a group of 10 juniors and seniors in the student government: Julia, Ana, Samantha, Megan, Sigal, Kaitlyn, Sienna, Michael, Savannah, and Lisa. We focus on community outreach and global awareness within our school. Julia and Ana attended a speaker series workshop where Charlize Theron and Dr. Michael Bennish of Mpilonhle presented their program in South Africa and its needs. Upon their return we were excited and eager to support a program that provides the artistic education that we so value in our own lives! Thank you so much for your support of our efforts.
