What?

These five lots of medicine will be used in 200 medical outreach campaigns to treat patients with basic conditions and vaccinate them against preventable diseases. Of the 25,080 direct estimated beneficiaries of the campaigns, these lots will be used to allow 15,665 people to recover and return to their normal level of function. The medicine will be prescribed by a team of medical personnel including a general doctor, obstetrician, dentist, pharmacist and topical/triage nurse who will make monthly visits to select public sites. This medicine will serve as incentive for impoverished residents to return to the outreach campaigns where they will receive both individualized care and educational workshops.

Why?

In the shantytowns and earthquake-affected districts of Chincha and Cañete, access to primary medical care is incredibly limited. The few medical facilities available are often at a distance that suffering patients cannot reach. As a result, many residents fall victim to preventable diseases or easily treatable conditions. Without the medicine that could improve their lives, these individuals are unable to recover and return to the activities they depend on to support themselves and their families.

How?

These five lots of medicine will be purchased in bulk and safely stored at the Chincha Baja Medical Center. They will then be distributed to the professionals staffing the campaigns. The lots will be divided and provided daily to the staff according to the estimated number of attendees at a campaign. When prescribed, the medications will be used to treat common conditions including fungal and bacterial skin infections, diarrhea, gastrointestinal illnesses, and asthma and to vaccinate against preventable diseases.

History of San Pedro Medical Center

Chincha Province shares a rich cultural, social and economic history with other parts of Peru, dating from the Inca civilization, with the Paracas, Nazca and Chincha cultures influencing life in this area, and contributing to a sense of national pride. In Chincha, 94.4% of all homes were destroyed or damaged by the 2007 earthquake, as well as schools, hospitals, community centers and other public services. Pre-existing conditions of extreme poverty were compounded in the aftermath of the earthquake; the average income for many families in these areas is approximately $100 per month, while the monthly cost of living to meet basic needs is $150.

Climate

From January to April, temperatures rise to 30°C (86.4°F) during the day, and between May and December, the sun is covered by clouds, producing extreme levels of humidity, dampness and fog, with temperatures dropping to 11°C (41.8°F) during the day, and lower at night.

Challenges facing San Pedro Medical Center

Throughout Chincha and Cañete provinces, nearly half the population are impoverished, and a further 25% of this group face extreme poverty. The limited public services that existed prior to the earthquake were destroyed and have not yet been reinitiated. Access to healthcare, education, child protection, housing and employment opportunities are all critical that need to be addressed to enable dignified lives for residents of Chincha.

Main Occupations

Agricultural work and fishing are the most common occupations in the provinces. Prior to the earthquake, the unemployment rate for men was 11.9% while for women it was 13.3%. After the earthquake, men’s unemployment rate increased to 16.2%, while women’s leapt to 26.1%.
