The collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig has caused irreversible damage to the Louisiana coastline and its fragile ecosystems. Oil continues to seep into the Gulf of Mexico, leaving local fisherman and small businesses in the area reeling from the impact of the spill. Contaminated waters have left fishermen without an alternative means of providing for themselves and their families.
Citizen Effect is leading an exploratory mission to the Louisiana Coast from June 27 through July 1. Our goal is to create a true citizen effect: find local charities to pair with a national fundraising drive and help fishermen to find a sustainable, environmentally friendly future— one that will accurately address the long-term economic, environmental, cultural effects of the disaster.
Tell us (gulf@citizeneffect.org) what you want to know and how we can help you — the citizen -- be part of the solution in the Gulf. Follow us on our mission to help communities in the Gulf via Facebook http://www.facebook.com/CitizenEffect, Twitter http://twitter.com/citizenEffect, and our blog http://citizeneffect.org/blog.
Geoff Livingston, of Zoetica and Mashable, and Citizen Effect's May Yu and Dan Morrison will travel to the Louisiana Coast to meet and talk with fishermen, local businesses, and organizations. We hope to pair their local expertise and knowledge with our ability to create a national, social media driven citizen movement and fundraising drive to help the people affected by this terrible disaster.
By assessing the needs of local communities and organizations who can take part in sustainable recovery, we will find projects Citizen Philanthropists can directly undertake to support the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
We believe that BP and the Obama administration have been incapable of providing a satisfactory resolution to the incredible devastation from the Deep Horizon oil spill. In fact, both BP and the federal government only seem to react under the gun of media pressure.
As a society, we continue to experience great anger about this situation. While BP has taken responsibility, it's clear they cannot resolve the matter. We cannot wait for corporations or the government to act. It's been over two months and the crisis is deepening.
This exploratory mission seeks to transform our anger and concern into activism and create a true citizen effect. Through direct citizen journalism, we will examine the needs and problems faced by the Gulf Coast communities, and help determine long-term, sustainable solutions for economic and environmental recovery.
To accomplish this, we are going to the Gulf to speak with the people: the fishermen, small businesses and local organizations. They best understand their economy, environment, and needs more than anyone. We will be traveling with Catholic Charities, the Greater New Orleans Foundation, America's Second Harvest, and others to directly share the stories of their constituents.
By combining their knowledge and our expertise, we hope to partner with charity organizations to provide the opportunity for Citizen Philanthropist to directly help these fishermen build a sustainable, environmentally friendly future. We will utilize our social media to release a citizen journalist accounting of the story using our media tools, specifically Twitter, Facebook, FLickr, U-Stream and of course our blogs.
