Undiagnosed STD’s statistically increase the chance of infection with each exposure. At this time there is an STD prevalence rate of 3%. This prevalence can be drastically reduced with proper diagnosis and treatment. Wherever there are high levels of unemployment, there are high levels of medically uninsured persons. Without the means to get tested, many sexually active adults may have been exposed to STD's without their knowledge.
The targeted outreach method of field screening identifies infections that are not being seen in the clinical setting. Because these infections are identified, all of the clients diagnosed are able to be treated; making an impact on the overall health of the community.
The funds for this project will provide one field testing kit as well as all the materials required to fill one kit for HIV & STD screening. This refillable kit will allow 100 people to get screened for multiple infections. By finding and treating STD’s, the population’s chance of infection is statistically reduced with each sexual encounter.
The funds for this project will provide one field testing kit as well as all the materials required to fill one kit for HIV & STD screening for 100 persons. The HIV & STD testing outreach kit allows outreach workers to have easy access to all of the materials needed to provide HIV & STD screening in an outreach setting. It combines all of the paperwork & clinical supplies into one portable, easy to carry, briefcase size kit. Combined with the phlebotomy lockable carry tray, it’s a complete portable clinical specimen collection package.
ACCESS outreach workers from the HIV & STD Prevention program have been doing field testing for HIV for over 10 years and have tested thousands of people. In the last year, ACCESS has begun to incorporate field testing for STD’s into its HIV testing activities. Undiagnosed STD’s statistically increase the chance of infection with each exposure to HIV. The data shows that through these targeted outreach testing activities, the prevalence rate for STD tests increased significantly; pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence went from 0% to 8%. Our targeted outreach method of field screening identifies infections that we are not seeing in the clinical setting. Because we could identify them, we were able to treat all of the clients diagnosed and made an impact on the overall health of the community. By finding and treating STD’s we can statistically reduce the population’s chance of infection with each sexual encounter.
ACCESS outreach workers will use this kit for HIV & STD screening at community health fairs, in bars/clubs, at outdoor events & festivals.
