COTS provides emergency shelter to 140 residents in it's Peterboro facility. These residents include the chronically homeless, victims of domestic violence, families, single adults and children. The average stay in this shelter is 55 days, and during their stay all residents will be participating in activities leading to housing stability and independence.
This project provides three prepared meals per day to 140 Emergency Shelter Program residents for one week.
Funds will be used towards costs associated with preparing and purchasing food, food related supplies, and the food itself. In addition, this project funds the two full time staff who purchase and prepare food and manage the volunteers that serve food to the shelter residents.
COTS is committed to providing warm and nutritious meals to our shelter guests. While the daily menu changes, here is a typical day:
Breakfast: Bacon, sausages (pork/turkey), eggs, bread, juice, coffee, muffins, bagels, cereal (hot/cold)
Lunch: sandwiches (w/cheese), juice, fruit
Dinner: Chicken, beef, poultry, pork, beans, lentils, bread, vegetables, and pasta. Coffee, juice and milk are also served.
COTS utilizes the Housing First method. The Housing First approach is based on the concept that a homeless individual or household's first and primary need is to obtain stable housing, and that other issues that may affect the household can and should be addressed once housing is obtained. An important component of this model is access to healthy and nutritious food.
The food is purchased with the following vendors: GFS (Gordon Food System), Sysco, Penguin Juice, K&L Meats and Gleaners. Gleaners is a local non-profit that gives us a discount on purchases. COTS receives food donations through Forgotten Harvest.
Two to four full-time staff prepare the meal. At meal times, volunteers come in to assist.
