Bitiyari is a small, agricultural village in Gujarat, India that relies on the monsoon rains for water.
Women currently travel 2–3 hours to well 3 kms away in order to collect enough water for daily household use.
This project will provide Bitiyari with a community water tank and give the village the necessary water infrastructure for families to obtain clean water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and washing. The tank will allow the Bitiyari community to capture and store water from the monsoon rains, in addition to water from the unreliable visits of the government water tankard vehicle.
This project will construct a 40,000 liter capacity community water tank. The reinforced cement tank will include a covered top to keep water clean and devoid of dirt and other debris, and two handpumps to allow for easy water procurement.
Bitiyari does not have plumbing, irrigation, or other infrastructure neccessary to provide community members with access to water. Water used for drinking, cooking, agriculture, and cleaning rely on the monsoon rains. As a result, recent droughts and increasingly-shorter monsoon season have created a water shortage problem for the Bitiyari community.
Eight local workers from the Bitiyari community will be hired to complete the construction and masonry work. In addition a committee of village women will be formed to clean and maintain the community water tank, with support from the village Panchayat (municipal government).
About Me: I am a swimmer. I found it unfair that we have water at our fingertips and some people barely have enough to drink. I wanted to change that.
