Khengarpar is a small agricultural village that is does not have access to electricity. Families in Khengarpar need solar lights so they can conduct activities such as cooking and cleaning before sunrise and after sunset. The lights are also crucial in helping villagers ward off wild animals and fend off harmful insects.
The community solar lights will provide the village with a highly-needed, sustainable source of light that can be charged during the day and used at night.
This project will construct three community solar lights placed throughout the village to provide all 35 households with access to a clean and renewable source of light. Each solar light is approximately 7 feet tall, and includes a 3'x3' solar panel that is connected to top of the lamp post. The lights will be able to provide the community with light in the night while recharging during the day.
Khengarpar village does not have electricity, and energy options for the community include scavenging for wood, cutting down small trees and other techniques that contribute to deforestation and increase in carbon emissions. The solar lights are carbon free and reduce the village's dependence on kerosene, which can be a danger and health hazard.
Materials for the solar lights are purchased through a local vendor in Gujarat, India. A SEWA engineer will construct and assembly the lights, and teach the community on proper repair and maintenance.
