What?

This project will improve the learning environment of the San Pedro Educational Center in Chincha by fully equipping a multimedia classroom with a laptop and projector. It will allow students to learn from a variety of sources including internet, recorded and live stream video, on screen demonstrations, and online tutorials.

Why?

The education system in Chincha Baja has been severely disrupted due to the destruction of the majority of schools during the 2007 earthquake. Indefinite closures, insufficient capacity, and unstable infrastructure have deprived many impoverished children of the opportunity to attend school.

By providing the resources for technical education and computer literacy, this project will enable 300 students to attend classes in an up-to-date learning environment. Globalization and its immediacy of information demand that students take part in the ongoing technological revolution, to improve their familiarity with technology and in doing so, their lives.

How?

The San Pedro Education Center will enhance the education curriculum through a multimedia classroom that will allow the use of various media sources to supplement existing teaching materials. An existing open classroom will be converted to the multimedia classroom with the purchase and installation of a laptop computer that will connect to the school’s wireless network and an LCD projector. Once the classroom is set up, its use will be monitored by the project's director, the director of San Pedro Education Center, and the director of Coprodeli's education programs.

History of San Pedro Education Center

Chincha Province shares a rich cultural, social and economic history with other parts of Peru, dating from the Inca civilization. The Paracas, Nazca and Chincha cultures all influence life in the area, and contribute to a sense of national pride. In Chincha, 94.4% of all homes were destroyed or damaged by the 2007 earthquake, as well as schools, hospitals, community centers and other public services. Pre-existing conditions of extreme poverty were compounded in the aftermath of the earthquake; the average income for many families in these areas is approximately $US 100 per month, while the monthly cost of living to meet basic needs is $US 150.

In Chincha, Coprodeli will build 211 homes in the San Pedro Urbanization, along with a school to serve 650 students, a medical center that will benefit 25,080 individuals directly each year through health services, as well as 100,320 individuals who will benefit indirectly from humanitarian assistance and improved health of family members, and a youth outreach center that will attend to the needs of some of the most vulnerable children in the area.

Climate

From January to April, temperatures average 30°C (86.4°F) during the day, and between May and December, temperature drop to 11°C (41.8°F) during the day, and lower at night as the sun is covered by clouds, producing severe humidity, dampness, and fog.

Challenges facing San Pedro Education Center

Throughout Chincha, nearly half the population lives in conditions of poverty, and 25% of these individuals face extreme poverty. The limited public services that existed prior to the earthquake were decimated and have not been reinitiated. Access to healthcare, education, child protection, housing and employment opportunities are all critical needs to be addressed to ensure the residents of Chincha can lead dignified lives.

Due to the lack of basic services, people with sufficient resources often leave for larger cities like Lima or Ica. The migration of these individuals and families drains the region's resources and further isolates families living in poverty. Poor children lose motivation and drop out of school due to pressure from their families to go to work and contribute income as soon as possible. As such, there is a large achievement gap between poor and wealthy children.

Main Occupations

Agricultural work and fishing are the most common occupations in Chincha Province. Prior to the earthquake, the unemployment rate for men was 11.9%, while for women it was 13.3%. After the earthquake, men's rate of unemployment increased to 16.2%, while that for women leapt to 26.1%.
