The Boyanci Volunteer Group's project will support the completion of a community library in the Sta. María Education Center. This process will include finishing the library's floors, windows, and painting as well as reinforcing its concrete components. This project's funding will ensure that all these necessary tasks will be completed so the library can be opened as a multipurpose center for study and learning. The center's community library will offer quality services to approximately 300 students every school day. These students will have access to many new resources including books, librarians, research tools, and programming on various topics such as the environment, human rights, and gender equality. In addition, the Sta. María library will also be available to more than 1,500 community members through book loans, adult literacy courses, parent resource workshops, and community events.
This project will support the equipping and construction of a library in the Santa María Education Center in Pachacutec, Callao, Peru. Library construction will involve hiring personnel, buying materials, reinforcing concrete, and carrying out necessary masonry and metal work. All of these aspects will result in a complete, multipurpose center for study and learning for the community of Pachacutec. The library will provide students and the public with library services such as books, librarians, research tools, and activities related to various topics such as the environment, human rights, and gender equality.
In 2000, more than 3,000 Peruvian families were forcibly relocated to Callao Province’s hostile desert for political reasons. Their settlements have become Pachacutec, Ventanilla District’s newest and poorest shantytown and the home to between 120,000 and 140,000 people. Of this increasing population, 96% live in extreme poverty and 50% live in homes composed of temporary materials such as reed mats, sticks, and cardboard. These conditions have been worsened by the fact that Pachacutec has no sanitation network or steady source of drinking water. Most families cannot afford the limited amount of electricity available in the area. As a result, Pachacutec’s children face a constant struggle. All are at high risk for developing health problems related to parasites and malnutrition and many are unable to attend school because they are forced to work to support their families.
Amongst Pachacutec's poorest residents, children remain particularly vulnerable. Not only do the young face serious health risks that result from malnutrition and unsanitary living conditions, but they also are likely to be deprived of the education that could brighten their futures. By funding the materials and programming costs necessary to open and operate the school library, the Boyanci group will help create a safe, learning environment for Pachacutec students.
Local labor and businesses will be used to both produce and install the necessary equipment. This process will be supervised by Coprodeli to ensure it is completed in a timely manner without interrupting ongoing classes.
