WHAT IS CITIZEN EFFECT?
Citizen Effect is driven by the idea that anyone can make a real and
significant impact in the world. It is our mission to provide everyday
citizens the tools and networks they need to work directly with communities
in need around the world.
We give Citizen Philanthropists the ability to choose their project, leverage their social networks, and communicate directly with their partner community. We are also providing our field partners the tools they need to actively manage their projects so they can seamlessly share information with Citizen Philanthropists and directly report on the impact projects are having on the ground.
Citizen Philanthropists are powerful community builders. They help their partners across the world build more self-reliant and sustainable communities. But they also build stronger communities here at home by bringing people together for a common cause and promoting civic engagement. We believe giving and community building should be a central part of everyone’s life, not something left to weekends or annual drives.
WHY CITIZEN EFFECT?
A woman sells baked goods to provide enviro-friendly solar lanterns for salt farmers in Jogad, India.
Three friends organize a happy hour to repair a well in Devki, India.
A couple uses their wedding registry to raise money for a childcare center in Sedla, India.
Citizen Effect is a completely different approach to philanthropy.
Most nonprofits fund projects by asking for donations. But this can be discouraging. It’s impersonal, and often, a lot of money only seems to make a small difference. Even then, it’s hard to trace the impact of your dollars.
Citizen Effect works a little differently.
We are seeking people that do not just want to give $50, but want to bring their friends, family and social network together to raise $1,000 or $5,000 or $10,000 and to make a real and significant impact in the lives of a community in need. That is a Citizen Philanthropist. And they come in all shapes and sizes - retired teachers, yoga instructors, accountants, high school students, churches, synagogues and mosques, baseball teams and chess clubs, small business and corporations. What makes them all similar is their desire to take control of their giving experience, connect their social network to a community in need and to see the real, sustainable change they have created. Sound like you? Be the solution and be a Citizen Philanthropist. Sound like a friend of yours, tell them to be a Citizen Philanthropist. Or tell the world on Facebook, Twitter and My Space.
No one alone can help 1.4 billion people living on less than $1.25 per day escape poverty, or provide clean water for 2 million people. But you can partner with one community and help them build a more self-reliant and sustainable life by completing a small but critical project. Be the solution. Join Citizen Effect.

STAFF
We have an amazing staff that work hard every day to improve the lives of others.

Dan Morrison
Founder and CEO
I never thought a trip to India would have led to all of this and
there were a lot of times when wondered what the heck am I doing?! But
now all these experiences seem to make sense. What I am most thankful
for is all of the amazing people that made Citizen Effect their own.
They are the staff and board, and most importantly, they are the
Citizen Philanthropists. Here's the boring stuff. I used to work at
Prophet, an amazing brand and marketing strategy firm HQ'd in San
Francisco, and Kuczmarski & Associates a great innovation consulting
firm in Chicago. I was schooled in the Midwest at the University of
Notre Dame (history) and University of Chicago (Middle Eastern
Studies). One day, I will spend more time hiking and learning to kite
board.

May Yu
Project Manager
I grew up in Pasadena, California and have been moving east ever since.
I graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in Political Science
and experience in electoral politics and community outreach, and joined the then
two-man Citizen Effect team in June 2008. Since then, I have been working with Citizen
Effect Field Partners to develop critical projects and share the impact of their work
with world. Besides bridging communities through Citizen Effect, I enjoy books, street
food, water polo, social justice, exploring neighborhoods and talking to people about
what makes them tick. And trust me, our Field Partners and Citizen Philanthropists have
some of the best stories yet.

Brett Walling
Content Manager
Growing up in the DC metro region I’ve always had a strong interest in what’s going on around the world. As a documentary enthusiast from a young age, I knew I wanted to spend my career telling stories that would hopefully make a difference. After graduating from Villanova University in 2004 I spent two and a half years working in documentary film & TV and another 2 years working in and studying motion graphics design. When I’m not creating content for Citizen Effect I can be found playing music, rock climbing, or hiking along the Potomac. Having the opportunity to work on material that positively impacts the lives of others is a tremendous privilege that I look forward to every day.

Kate Mulder
Citizen Philanthropist Manager
After living in five states, two countries and spending most of my extra time
traveling around the world, my story is always the same. I thrive on meeting new
people, hearing their stories, and being inspired by their accomplishments.
I am thrilled to work every day with the powerhouses of Citizen Effect –
our Citizen Philanthropists. My love for people served me on a professional note,
when I spent seven years in the pharmaceutical industry. As cliché as it sounds,
a trip to Africa then changed my life. Since then I have devoted myself to supporting
industries that make a difference in the socio-economic climate of developing countries.
This includes the Sustainable and Adventure Tourism industry, the world of web 2.0, and
startups. While not working you can find me hiking, rocking to an African dance class,
or savoring a nice glass of Malbec wine. What a joy and an honor it is to serve our
Citizen Philanthropists every day. It's awesome to unite all this excitement to build a
sustainable future, into something completely tangible, and improving lives around the world.

She is also a Cornell University consultant, specializing in training managers and administrators at the New York Department of Social Services.
Elizabeth was the recipient of the Palm Beach County Social Worker of the Year Award in 2004, and in 2006 she was honored as Advocate of the Year by Florida’s Children First, Inc. Most recently, Elizabeth was the named a “Local Hero” of Palm Beach County by Bank of America.
At the end of 2007, Elizabeth spearheaded a joint venture between Turtle Nest Village and Kids@Home, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of foster youth, and served as Executive Director of both agencies while they moved toward a full merger.
Prior to earning her Master’s Degree in Social Work, Elizabeth co-founded the Respectable Street Café in West Palm Beach’s historic downtown. Now entering its third decade as a successful restaurant and nightspot, Respectable Street has been a leader in the revitalization of downtown West Palm Beach.

OUR FIELD PARTNERS
Simply put, our field partners make our work possible. All of our partners unique—they’re all over the world, in different countries and on different continents. Some have more than a million members, and others are much smaller. But they all have one thing in common: they know what’s needed in their communities and how to make it happen. Our field partners have worked in their local communities for many years. They use local labor, from construction workers to engineers, in their projects, which makes them sustainable. And most of all, they love the experience that 1Well gives them: the opportunity to work with you, our Citizen Philanthropists, and connect to a community across the world. All of our partners undergo a rigorous screening process, so we only work with the very best.
